Fleas and ticks are a big problem in our area and trying to get rid of them is more difficult than preventing them. In fact, we recommend that your pet receive flea and tick prevention treatments year-round. Flea prevention products can guard your pet from the discomfort of flea infestation. Using flea prevention on your pet will prevent fleas from taking up residence in your home.
Rea Road's pharmacy carries many different products to prevent fleas. The newest products contain growth inhibitors so that fleas cannot mature and lay eggs. Not every product is right for every pet. Your pet's veterinarian may recommend a topical treatment or may decide that an oral medication or pill is the right way to administer a preventive.
Ticks carry disease that can devastate pet and human health alike. They may carry
- Lyme disease
- Rocky Mountain spotted fever
All of these can be avoided with tick preventives and by periodically examining your dog or cat. Ticks' natural habitats are areas of vegetation. Grassy areas like meadows are places for them to hide, as are woods and weeds. If you have been outdoors with your dog, before coming inside, make sure to inspect him or her carefully, especially around the feet, head, ears, and neck. Remove the tick with tweezers, being careful not to touch it and wrap it in toilet tissue. Dispose of it by flushing it or dropping it into a container of rubbing alcohol.
