Veterinary Dental Care for Dogs & Cats
Proper care of your pet's mouth and teeth doesn't just help prevent tooth decay. Regular cleanings have been proven to keep harmful bacteria from damaging heart valves and the kidneys. Rea Road Animal Hospital recommends regularly scheduled cleanings as part of a routine that can help protect your pet's health.
Every wellness exam includes a comprehensive examination of your pet's oral cavity, but a visual examination alone cannot detect every abnormality. If we believe a problem exists, we will use digital dental X-rays to better examine your pet's teeth. Because every pet is an individual, our recommendations for your dog or cat take age, breed, and lifestyle into consideration. In addition to cleanings, we can also perform tooth extractions and enamel bonding to repair worn teeth.
Dental procedures, including cleaning, or prophylaxis, are always performed under general anesthesia so that your pet feels no pain. Before we begin, we perform blood tests and an EKG to make sure that your pet is healthy enough for the procedure. A board-certified cardiologist reviews the EKG, and we do everything possible to ensure the safety of your pet. A dedicated staff person will monitor your pet at all times for levels of
- Carbon dioxide
- Blood pressure
An intravenous (IV) catheter will be placed that allows us to administer medication that might be needed, and we use the safest anesthesia available. Cleanings are done by a specialized veterinary technician under the supervision of a veterinarian.
Our veterinarians make sure to give you the reasons why any procedure is appropriate for your pet. We take the time to make sure you have all of the information and will answer any questions you may have before we schedule the appointment.
